He placed the breastpiece on him and put the Urim and Thummim in the breastpiece. – Leviticus 8:8

Today's Scripture Reading (November 5, 2021): Leviticus 8

The flip of a coin. A fifty-fifty experiment in probability. And regardless of how many times you flip the coin, the likelihood of the next flip being heads or tails remains the same; there is still a fifty percent chance of either eventuality. There is no use trying to guess which it is. The best strategy is to stick with one or the other, and if you flip enough coins, you will be right about half the time. Change your options with every flip of the coin, and you might beat the odds and be right more often than you are wrong, but you also run the risk of being wrong more than you are right, or, if you are really unlucky, never being right at all.

For some, it has become a way of making decisions, especially choices limited to a binary expression (a choice between two things). And it can work, although I would not recommend making life decisions on the authority of a coin. But if you are trying to decide between two critical opportunities, why not try this. Assign each option to one side of the coin, flip the coin, and then ask yourself if you are happy or disappointed with the result. Your reaction to the flip of the coin might reveal the hidden desires of your heart and reveal the space where you have placed your hope.

The priest was outfitted with a breastpiece, and inside the breastpiece was placed a pair of stones; the "Urim and Thummin," one of which was light in color and the other dark. The way these stones were used is hidden in antiquity, but from the context, it seems that they were hidden inside of the breastpiece, and when a question was asked of God, one of the stones would be removed, indicating God's "yes" or "no." It was the priest's way of flipping a coin, but the result of this coin flip was believed to be controlled by God.

With the use of the "Urim and Thummin," the will of God was revealed to the people. God spoke through these stones to the children of Israel. It was a sacred flip of the coin, but it was not a game of chance. In this exercise, the results of the "Urim and Thummin" were in the hands of God, and it was his hand that shaped the future of the nation.
